Locked by MegaBossMan. This isn't current news, cause it happened a long time ago, an answer was given, and is no longer relevant. Locked!

"The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service was terminated on May 20, 2014 for all Wii and DS games; online play features incorporated into these games are no longer be available after this date; the shutdown is connected to the shutdown of multiplayer services by GameSpy, who was acquired by Glu Mobile in 2012. 3DS and Wii U games are not affected by the shutdown because their multiplayer platform uses Nintendo's own infrastructure instead of a third-party service. The Wii Shop Channel, DSiWare shop, third-party video services, and the Pay & Play variants will remain active for the moment."
I think it's safe to assume there was a variety of reasons of why it was shut down. Although, didn't the Wi-Fi suck? At least for me. Anyone remember enjoying playing Smash on Wi-Fi?

Animal Crossing never did it for me. Dunno why. Probably that one story about Nook, you know the one? I don't think I can be more specific about it without, you know, breaking the family friendly rule.
Alternately, it could have been the mild case of Michael Bay Syndrome. No explosions within half an hour and I lose my focus on something.
